The ATVS Only/Wildman/Polaris UK team of Jason Wildman and Jay Gröpl finished third in the 4x4 class at the gruelling French Goncourt 10-hour endurance last weekend. Ahead of them the two-man British teams of Steve Atkins and Simon David won the 4x4 class, with Derek Burns and Alex Bethell in second. The event heralded the inaugural outing ‘in anger’ for former multi-Brit quad champ ‘Ironman’ Wildman on his ATVs Only/Wildman/Polaris UK Project X quad. In the week leading up to the event, Wildman and partner Tracey Lloyd burnt the midnight oil, putting the finishing touches to the machine by fitting (amongst others) DWT Sector 3 wheels, Jay Parts Polaris-special components, Terache Atlas tyres, PEP PB1 suspension, Demon XHD axles and Fasst Flexx handlebars.
The machine certainly looked the part, and Wildman reckons it’s got a lot more to give yet; “The track, which ran over seven and a bit kilometres, was fast and flowing and I was able to put in some really quick and consistent lap times. The Project quad handled brilliantly and proved itself to be something very special in its first outing. We’re really excited to see what the future brings.”
Snapshot of the event ….
The five-hour session on Saturday kicked off at 8pm and began with a sighting lap for all riders. Gröpl started first but had some technical problems in the dry and dusty conditions. After 1h:45ms, as daylight faded, Wildman took over and put in some very quick and consistent laps, getting to grips with the new machine. Gröpl went out again, but had more problems after a few laps and so Wildman took to the track again and continued to set the pace and finished the session.
Largely due to Gröpl’s technical issues, the duo started Sunday morning two laps down. Wildman continued to put in some impressive lap times and, after 40 minutes, was ahead of the field by several minutes. Gröpl had ironed out his issues and continued at a good pace for an hour. Wildman went out again, but made a mistake which unfortunately resulted in a crash leaving him out of the race. Gröpl dug deep and continued for the last 2.5-hours on his own, finishing a respectable third in class.
